It’s a convenient option, especially for tourists or beginners wanting to try out different boards. Surf apart from other surf shops in the area is its commitment to representing local surf culture through delivering exceptional customer service. Whether you are a seasoned surfer or just beginning your surfing journey, E.T. Family-owned Zuma Jay’s is a Southern California icon, proudly holding the title of Malibu’s oldest surf shop. Owned by surfboard shaper and all around interesting guy Jefferson Wagner, Zuma Jay Surfboards sits just south of the famed Malibu Pier. A law student in Northern California, Jefferson was drawn to Southern California and surfing by "the romance of the ocean and the indignity of high-rise buildings," he once told the Malibu Times.

From our complimentary beach cruisers, access to local discounts, and a short walk to the beach, there’s something for everyone to feel like a local during your stay. The home, completed in 2019, has four bedrooms in about 4,500 square feet. The interiors feature Monterey cypress wood with a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The warm and inviting atmosphere is met with modern furnishings and art inspired by 1970s surf culture. Homeowner and surfer Christopher Hansen envisioned a secluded oceanfront retreat in León, Mexico, where he could keep an eye on the waves. From the beach, stairs lead up to the concrete-and-glass structure’s principal bedroom on the second level.

Check out Naja’s Place in Redondo Beach for legendary burgers, fries, and refreshing craft beers. The summer weather and Golden State atmosphere attract tourists to Los Angeles from June through August. This makes finding solitude between Palos Verdes and Malibu virtually impossible. The main groundswell direction is from the SW channel, which is less than desirable for surfing in LA. T catch better waves during the summer, head to Huntington Beach, Malibu, or Santa Barbara.

Secret Surf Spots in Los Angeles

Today, Zuma Jay is a licensed Hollywood stuntman and the former mayor of Malibu who once wrote a book on the history of surf wax. He can often be found behind the counter of his shop, and while word is he can be a bit rough around the edges, one thing can’t be disputed—he loves Malibu, and he loves surfing. A good spot for all levels, Bolsa Chica is mostly a pretty standard beach break but can get really good with the right conditions. It works all year round, during the summer it will be mellow and smaller and during the fall to winter, you will find the best waves and certain days where it can get fairly big and fun. There is metered parking as well as free parking along the side streets. Porto is often walled up, breaks quickly, and is dumpy, but when the conditions are right – it can be a total blast!

Our clients approached Feldman Architecture to design a family home in an unassuming neighborhood - aware of the feel and scale of the surrounding structures. The clients were well-versed on the nuances of the site and dreamt of a home that fit naturally and sustainably into its beachy, eclectic locale. El Porto in particular draws a range of surfers from pros and intense shortboarders to beginners and those just looking to get out in the water. I will say, while you can rent boards right on the beach and there are many new surfers out in the water, it’s really not a good spot for beginners on MOST days. Just north of the Los Angeles County Line, this is where LA surfing starts. There’s a point at the northern end of the beach that delivers the most consistent (right) wave, especially on bigger swells.

So, whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a rookie rider, our list will cater to your wave-riding needs. Dive N Surf, another South Bay watersports landmark, has been around for six decades and is considered one of the region’s premier dive facilities. The Meistrell brothers would go on to found Body Glove and become wetsuit pioneers. Their selection of surfboards is smaller compared to nearby competitors, but Dive N Surf makes up for it in the amount of dive gear they carry. They also offer SCUBA courses and are famous for their annual yard sale, a typically month-long event held in late winter with deeply discounted items for sale.

Feldman tapped sawyer Evan Shiveley of Arborica to provide the locally sourced timber. Sustainability was also an important factor for both Feldman and Arborica. Kurrle explains that working with a log is not unlike sourcing a ribeye or filet, and often only the best parts of the wood are used. Arborica, however, used every type of wood grade within the log to finish the home. After finding paradise on a Hawaiian papaya farm, filmmaker Jess Bianchi and jewelry designer Malia Grace Mau tapped San Francisco artist Jay Nelson to build their dream home in just five weeks.

Broken up into three take-off spots along the point, Surfrider is one of the most popular beaches in the area for a wide range of beginner to advanced surfers. The spring, as well as October, are often my favorite times to surf in LA. The weather is pleasant, but it’s not as crowded and my favorite spots tend to have decent swells coming through at these times of the year. Finally, keep in mind that you’ll need a wetsuit if you’re planning on surfing here in the winter months – it may be warm on land, but the water temperature definitely drops!

It was established in 2006 and primarily serves as a surf shop for the local community between Marina Del Rey and Culver City. It is a popular spot and hangout for surfers from nearby areas, including Venice and Santa Monica. Located in the heart of Santa Monica, ZJ Boarding House is a popular surf shop that has been serving the Los Angeles community for over 30 years. It’s a significant destination hotspot for surf-happy visitors looking for quality gear and accessories.

The hotel is located right off historic Highway 101 and a few minutes walk to the closest beach/surf break Beacons. There’s a small outdoor lounge area, free parking is available right in front of the hotel, and their hot outdoor shower is the perfect spot for a post-surf rinse. Shops like Aqua Surf Shop, Rider Shack Surf Shop, and ZJ Boarding House offer surf lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. The experienced instructors help you master the waves in a fun and safe environment. The shop’s decades-long legacy as a premier dive and surf headquarters has cemented its status as a must-visit destination in Los Angeles.

Some of the best beginner beaches include Malibu Surfrider Beach, Sunset Beach, and Sapphire St. in Redondo Beach. The annual average water temperature in southern California typically hovers around 62°F. Water temperature in the winter ranges from about 55°F to 60°F and in the summer about 60°F to 65°F (though this summer we had a period where the water temperature hit 70°F and it was glorious!). It rains most often in the spring, but still not very often and it’s not typically very heavy. There is no better way to remember your trip to The Golden State than to take home some merchandise. Treat yourself to some new gear at Bay Street Boards, the highest-rated surf and skate store in Santa Monica Boulevard.
